The Rajendrasinh Jadeja Cup - The former Finchley star cricketer, Raj Jadeja!

The former Finchley star cricketer, Raj Jadeja, who played for the Club in the 1980’s, is honoured in his home town of Jamnagar.

The following was reported recently in the Jamnagar press:

A season of knock-out cricket tournaments will be played between 64 teams from Saurashtra.

The Rajendrasinh Jadeja Cup and Vaman Jani Cup were inaugurated in Jamnagar by the Jamnagar District Cricket Association. The two former cricketers were honoured by organizing knock out one-day tournaments in their memory.

The Jamnagar District Cricket Association started 40-over knock-out tournaments from today to honour two former Ranji cricketers from Jamnagar. In these tournaments, a total of 64 matches of senior and under-14 players will be played in front of the Ajitsinhji Cricket Pavilion.

Rajendrasinh Jadeja, the fast bowler who created a sensation in the Ranji Trophy and captained the India U19 team, was once considered the equivalent of Kapil Dev, died during the deadly wave of Corona virus. Similarly, passed away last year, Ranji trophy player Vamanbhai Jani, was a close friend of Test cricketer Salim Durrani since childhood, The Rajendrasinh Jadeja Cup for senior cricketers and Vaman Jani Cup for under-14 players were organized to honour these ex-Ranji players of Jamnagar by the cricket world. These knock-out tournaments will be played as 40-over cricket tournaments. 49 teams from Saurashtra including Jamnagar will participate in the Rajendrasinh Cup and 15 teams will participate in the Vaman Jani Cup.

The tournament was kicked off today with a bang, with bands playing and flowers. The families of both former Ranji trophy players were present during the opening ceremony. Teams from cities including Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Junagadh, Vadodara, Jamnagar, Morbi, Drarka, and Sikka will participate in these tournaments over the next two months. Players from Jamnagar regularly play at national level in the Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy. The Rajendrasinh Jadeja Cup and Vaman Jani Cup are being organized by the Jamnagar District Cricket Association and will be played annually.

The tournaments were inaugurated by former Minister of State Dharmendra Singh (Hakubha) Jadeja. Also, the families of former Ranji Trophy players Vaman Jani and Rajendrasinh Jadeja made a special appearance and expressed their happiness at the event. Family members including Himanshu Jani of Vaman Jani's family along with Yashik Kumari Jadeja, Rajendra Singh Jadeja's god wife and daughter-in-law were also present. On this occasion, Khabar Gujarat Editor Nilesh Udani, Corporate Jayrajsingh Jadeja, President of Jamnagar District Cricket Association Ajaybhai Swadia, Vice President Vinubhai Dhruva, Joint Secretary Bharatsingh Jadeja, Coach Mahendrasingh Chauhan and Project Chairman of the entire tournament Kashyap Mehta, Tournament Coordinator Bharat Mathar, Committee member Narendra Kanzari. The tournaments were inaugurated in the presence of many cricket lovers and parents.
